Certificate II in Underground Coal Mining

The RII20320 - Certificate II in Underground Coal Mining introduces you to the skills and knowledge required to work as an operator in an underground coal mining environment.

Who should attend?

Individuals who are sponsored by their mine to pursue a career as an underground mine worker.

What you will learn

You will gain skills and knowledge in:

  • Underground communication devices
  • Self-escape equipment and self-escape systems to evacuate the mining environment
  • Isolation techniques
  • Reading mine plans
  • Industry-specific risk management tools
  • Basic first aid skills
  • Lifting and towing operations
  • Firefighting techniques
  • Principal hazard awareness; including ventilation, gas, strata, and spontaneous combustion management
Credential issued

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a RII20320 - Certificate II in Underground Coal Mining.

You must complete 11 units (made up of core and electives) to achieve this qualification. Mines Rescue offer the following units:

  • RIIUND207E Conduct underground lifting operations

In addition to the above, you will also receive two additional units of competency while undergoing training with Mines Rescue

  • RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents
  • MSMSUP205 Transfer loads
Course delivery

This course is delivered through a combination of face-to-face classroom training, desktop scenarios, case studies and practical training exercises using virtual reality technologies.

Assessment includes written, oral and practical tests; logbooks, practical workplace assessments under the guidance of an appropriate workplace mentor; and submitted projects/assignments.

Duration

7 days face-to-face completed in 4 modules. Modules are scheduled based on site requirements, typically within a 6-month period. Students will also have post-course work to complete at their mine site.

Module 4 – 1 Day: Basic Strata & Gas Management
  • RIIMCU217 Apply spontaneous combustion management measures
  • RIIMCU208E Conduct basic strata control operations
  • RIIMCU214E Conduct ventilation operations 
Note: this module has post-course work that must be completed at an underground coal mine.
Entry requirements
  • There are no formal prerequisites for this course
  • It is expected that you are employed within the underground coal mining industry and have underground site access to complete assessments
  • This course is based on a Certificate II level qualification. As part of your course enrolment at Mines Rescue, we would like you to complete a short online quiz so we can understand your current levels of language, literacy and numeracy and then if required, tailor your training to suit your needs. You will be required to complete the quiz prior to attending your course.

Mines Rescue is not CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) registered. If you are visiting Australia and hold a visa, please contact Mines Rescue directly prior to enrolling into any of our courses.
