Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations - Deputies

The RII40420 - Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations prepares you to take on the more senior responsibilities of mining supervisors and team leaders (Deputies) such as managing teams, implementing risk management systems and applying statutory requirements.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations.

You must complete 14 units (made up of core and electives) to achieve this qualification. Mines Rescue offer the following units:

  • RIIMEX406D Apply and monitor mine transport systems and production equipment
  • RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process
  • RIIUND401E Apply and monitor the ventilation management plan
  • RIIRAI401D Apply and monitor mine services and infrastructure systems
  • RIIMCU406E Apply and monitor the inrush management plan
  • BSBMGT401 Show leadership in the workplace (unit is completed via online learning and assessment)

Successful completion of this course will meet the NSW Resources Regulator’s Tertiary or Vocational Qualification requirement to apply for the Deputy of Underground Coal Mines examination. Please refer to the NSW Resources Regulator website for further information.

Course delivery

This course is delivered through a combination of face-to-face classroom training, online learning, desktop scenarios, case studies and practical training exercises using virtual reality technologies.

Assessments include written and oral tests; projects/assignments; and practical workplace assessments under the guidance of an appropriate workplace mentor. Assessments are completed in Microsoft Word; please ensure you have an active Microsoft Office subscription before attending class.
Duration

25 days face-to-face (units conducted over a 12 – 24-month period), additional unit completed online. 
This course is also available via our online platform and as an accelerated program (self-directed learning).

Entry requirements
  • There are no formal prerequisites for this course
  • As part of your course enrolment, you will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Quiz and an Academic Integrity eLearning prior to commencing course work.
  • It is expected that you have experience working in an underground coal mine environment and access to an underground workplace mentor to complete assessments
  • This course is based on a Certificate IV level qualification. You should have appropriate literacy, numeracy and computer skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.
