Diploma of Underground Coal Mining Management - Undermanagers (Blended Delivery)


The RII50920 - Diploma of Underground Coal Mining Management prepares you to take on the responsibilities of mining supervisors (Undermanagers), including managerial, planning and technical skills to successfully operate with a high level of autonomy.

Who should attend?

Existing workers wishing to progress towards becoming an Undermanager in the underground coal mining industry and are unable to attend all delivery sessions face to face.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a RII50920 Diploma of Underground Coal Mining Management.

You must complete 12 units (made up of core and electives) to achieve this qualification. Mines Rescue offer the following units:

* You may wish to substitute this unit with RIIBLA302E Conduct shotfiring operations in underground coal mines.
** You may wish to substitute this unit with RIIMCU504D Implement the outburst management plan.

Successful completion of this course will meet the NSW Resources Regulator’s Tertiary or Vocational Qualification requirement to apply for the Undermanager of Underground Coal Mines examination. Please refer to the NSW Resources Regulator website for further information.

Course delivery

This course is delivered through a combination of face-to-face classroom training and self-directed online learning. Students will have access to written materials, video modules, desktop scenarios and case studies. 

Students will be required to attend the 1-day Support Shotfiring course and the 5-day Emergency Preparedness Underground course at the Mines Rescue station. 

Assessment includes written and oral tests, practical workplace assessments under the guidance of an appropriate workplace mentor and submitted projects/assignments. Assessments are completed in Microsoft Word; please ensure you have an active Microsoft Office subscription before enrolment.

Duration

Students will typically complete the course over a 12–18-month period.

Entry requirements
  • There are no formal prerequisites for this course
  • As part of your course enrolment, you will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Quiz and an Academic Integrity eLearning prior to commencing course work.
  • It is expected that you have experience working in an underground coal mine environment and access to an underground workplace mentor to complete assessments
  • This course is based on a Diploma level qualification. You should have appropriate literacy, numeracy and computer skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.

Mines Rescue is not CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) registered. If you are visiting Australia and hold a visa, please contact Mines Rescue directly prior to enrolling into any of our courses.
