To coincide with National Diabetes Week (9-15 July 2023), CS Health has launched a campaign to raise awareness of developing Type 2 Diabetes and its associated risks.
Being overweight, and carrying weight around your waist in particular, puts you at a higher risk of developing diabetes.
Currently, 87% of NSW coal mine workers are overweight or obese and 70% have an ‘at risk’ waist circumference (women should aim for a waist circumference less than 80cm while men should aim for less than 94 cm).
But these aren’t the only risk factors. Unavoidable risk factors include age, family history and ethnicity; while avoidable risk factors – things you can manage – include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.
The good news is that a small changes can make a big difference to managing and preventing diabetes. For example, make healthy food choices and control portion sizes and try to move for at least 30 minutes each day.
‘Know your waistline, know your diabetes risk’.
