Introduction
This course refreshes your skills and knowledge to use a variety of breathing apparatus should you need to self-escape an underground coal mining environment
This course includes simulator oxygen-generating self-contained self-rescuers (OSCSR) training to comply with the 3-yearly requirement within Section 103 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022 (NSW).

What you will learn
- Situational and risk awareness
- Communication in an emergency
- Self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) use, donning and changeover procedures*
- Simulator oxygen-generating self-contained self-rescuers (OSCSR) training
- Compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA) donning and changeover procedures
- Filter self-rescuer (FSR) donning and changeover procedures
- Evacuation wearing self-escape equipment
*This course includes training in the operation of self-rescuers and breathing apparatus, including simulator oxygen-generating self-contained self-rescuers (OSCSR) to comply with Section 103 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022 (NSW).
Credential issued
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded:
- Mines Rescue - Self-Escape Card
This card may be required for site access. Please confirm directly with your site for their requirements.
Course delivery
This course is delivered through classroom-based training, desktop scenarios, virtual reality, and practical exercises.
Assessment includes written, oral and practical tests.

Entry requirements
- You must have successfully completed sufficient Self-Escape training (both SCSR and CABA) within eighteen (18) months of the course date.
- When booking this course, you will be asked to provide evidence that you have completed the above training (e.g. your Self Escape Card dated within 18 months).

Other Information
The Self-Escape Refresher is offered at Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Lithgow and Moolarben.Alternative pathways are available at Gunnedah and Southern Mines Rescue for those requiring self-escape training or the Self-Escape Card.

Mines Rescue is not CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) registered. If you are visiting Australia and hold a visa, please contact Mines Rescue directly prior to enrolling into any of our courses.
