Introduction
This course provides you with the skills and knowledge to assess, withdraw and escape from an underground mine during a hazardous situation, using breathing apparatus.
Who Should Attend?
Individuals re-entering the underground mining industry who require accredited self-escape training to meet site requirements.
What you will learn
- Causes of hazardous situations
- Ventilation and mine gases
- Plan reading
- Communication in an emergency
- Self-rescuer use, donning and changeover procedures
- Compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA) donning procedures
- Evacuation wearing self-escape equipment
*This course includes training in the operation of self-rescuers and breathing apparatus to comply with Section 103 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022 (NSW).
If you require simulator oxygen generating self-contained self-rescuers training, please refer to the Self-Escape Induction (including OSCSR) course.
Credential issued
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the following units:
- RIIERR203E Escape from hazardous situations unaided
You will also receive an industry Self-Escape Card. This card may be required for site access.
Course delivery
This course is delivered through classroom-based training, desktop scenarios and practical exercises.
Assessment includes written, oral and practical tests.

Entry requirements
- There are no formal prerequisites for this course
- This course is based on a Certificate II level qualification. You should have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.
- Mines Rescue recommends you be aware of the policies and procedures of your workplace before starting the course.

Refresher:
Components of this course require refreshers as per Section 103 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2022 (NSW).
